Flies - why do they love my house & garden?

I detest flies, we have a screen on the back door to avoid them coming in but there are loads in the garden. We have a rabbit hutch, and a cat that does occasionally do his business out there although it is promptly cleaned up (well normally!) The flies seem to be round the hanging baskets and everywhere generally. Any ideas how to get rid of them? TIA

Erm I'm not sure you really can get rid of flies in your garden tbh. Just keep away from the things they are attracted to or stay inside if you really don't like them.

When I have flies in the house it's usually because neighbours have dog visiting, maybe it eats outside, otherwise could be poo - no flies otherwise.

Hmm I'm wondering if it is the neighbours, they have a dog staying with them at the mo. I hate flies usually but this last few weeks there are loads and I means loads must be about 60 or so in a relatively small garden. They don't seem to be attracted to the rabbit droppings but know they love cat and dog muck - yuk!

If you can get hold of any elder-flowers or mint, these do keep flies away, if you keep renewing them near windows. Have also heard they don't cross mirrors (!) but not yet remembered to try this out.
