Dishwasher makes glasses white..

We live in a hard water area but have just moved from a house with a softener to one without. I'm sure I'm supposed to have told the dishwasher this but I haven't figured out how to. I have been putting salt in (it hasn't asked but I'm generous) and rinse aid when the light comes on.

It has turned new glasses, washed twice, whitish. I've just washed them by hand to see if its permanent. Our crockery is all white China but it no longer has a shine- its dull like it has a white coat as well. The dishwasher also has "white" marks inside. It is normally run once a day on the eco 30 mins cycle but I have used cleaner on a long hot cycle recently, scrubbed out the filter on the bottom etc.

Any suggestions on what's wrong ?

where have you been putting the salt, and what kind of salt?

presumably you have lost the instructions, but you can probably download them from the manufacturer's website. You will need the model number, which is often one of the things engraved on the top edge of the door.

It's the lack of dishwasher salt that causes the white streaks - make sure you fill it right to the top - put the machine on empty on a hot wash, this should sort it out.

I've put a bag of granular dishwasher salt into the screwlid hole in the bottom. As I was doing it I realised what that weird funnel thing I found when moving was last time. It was finish dishwasher salt (online shopping random choice). I probably put 900g in - I chickened out putting it all in as it just kept going and didn't overflow (I use commercial washers at work that take the pelleted salt and they don't take 1kg a shot - probably filled up more than once a decade).

BTW John lewis dishwasher so I'll look for instructions on their website

the softener regeneration may have been set to "never" if you previously had softened water.

If you had an older Bosch, and had lost the instructions, you would look in the top left corner of the doorframe recess for a tiny blue adjustment dial.

Try turning the rinse aid level down a bit if you can, that can make glasses streaky. If you turn it down too much I have found it can leave a gritty type sediment so may take a bit of adjusting.

Turns out the manual was useful... Who would have thought....?

I've set the hardness to hard manually and electronically.

Now I'm sure this has been answered a dozen times on this page but.. If I use a 3-in-1 tablet do I really need to set the rinse aid to NO and turn the rinse aid dual down to 1 ? Now I've found the manual, I feel duty bound to follow it.

You need salt and you need rinse aid.

Multifunction tablets are not as good.

I would act as though you are using a normal tablet not a 3-in-1. In fact just buy the value ones, they're just as good and the other 2 functions of the 3 in 1 don't seem to do anything anyway!

Thank you all. It's cleaned, filters scrubbed, full of salt, full of rinse aid, set to deal with hard water and make use of rinse aid. Fingers crossed
