How can I stop spiders from making their webs on my washing line?

This year there seems to be an abnormal number of small spiders who are calling my washing line their home. Is the only answer to close the line and put a cover on it every night? What a faff.

Do you wipe your washing line to get it spider free before hand you put your washing out, or just hang it up and hope for the best?

Ignore the rogue 'hand' in the last sentence!

I'm watching with interest because I have around 5 million spiders living on my washing line and want to repel them!
