Ants in the toaster

we just got back from hols to find loads of ants in the kitchen, including one of the kitchen cupboards. (I feel as if i should say the house had been well cleaned by our cleaner when we were away, so was not squalid!) . There were lots around the toaster though i dont know if they were in the toaster, seems v likely though. Can I clean it? Its a 4 slice metal toaster so prob about 50 quid to buy a new one. DH totally unbothered says just to use it (cue vom emoticom).

Any advice? (About the toaster, not the DH).

You could chuck it in the freezer for a few hours to make sure they're all dead before cleaning it?

I suppose if there were any in there the heat would kill off any germs they had left anyway.

ooh thats a good idea. ive looked and cant really see any in it...but think it needs cleaning. but how would i acutally clean it inside? you cant reach anything.

Toast them?

Just turn it on for a long time! That should get rid of them... And they're only ants, it would be crazy to throw it out. Pull out the crumb tray and tap it sharply, turn it upside down and tap out the remaining crumbs, then turn it on. Ants won't stay in there for long, guaranteed.

dont i need to disinfect it or something? or is literally toasting them enough to get rid of any germs..? thanks!

Do as duchesse says. I'm not sure it's the germ thing that would freak me, more the fact I could be eating insects. Amts aren't known for being poo eaters etc.
