Stale smell in kitchen

There is a persistent stale smell in my kitchen.

How often should cupboards/ under units etc be cleaned? What could it be? Water sometimes drips from bathroom into kitchen. Could it be that warmer weather creating a stale smell because of this water in the wooden ceiling/bathroom floor?

Arghhh stop that drip! Might do some damage. I can't remember cleaning my cupboards in 6 years since I lived here tbh. Xxx

Have you checked it is not your dishcloth? I find they often smell stale even if you soak them in disinfectant or bleach.

Oh it's not a drip. Just sometimes the kids mess in the bathroom or splash in the bath and the water goes down.

Thanks for suggestions. Dont think its a dishcloth as I use quasi-disposable ones. Hmm any other ideas ?

Have you cleaned out your bin and fridge?

My money's on the cloth too. How often do you change it? Try popping it in the dishwasher or soak in washing up liquid to clean it and see if the smell goes away.

Thanks. I no longer use reusable cloths so not that. Bin cleaned recently.

have you got an extractor over the cooker?

Yes why?

because if the cooking fumes are not whisked outside, the kitchen will smell of stale cooking, and there will be a greasy film on all surfaces, but especially on top of wall cabinets.

Do you use your hood whenever cooking, and does it extract through the wall, or recirculate into the kitchen? How clean is the grease filter?

I am very concerned about the water you mention. There may be damp and mould under the bathroom floor. There might be a leaking waste pipe. Take off the bath panel and have a sniff and a look behind it.

Well the truth of the matter is [embarrassed] that I need to change fuse in extractor fan and don't know how. I do however have a window and a door in my kitchen and that whisks the cooking aromas outside. I think I may have found the source of the problem in a mop in bucket under sink. Think mop was put away not totally clean/dry and maybe odour from that? Will see in the morning if that has helped.

Re: the water from bathroom. Yes I think it is wreaking havoc with the electricity in the kitchen. Need to put very large rug/ lots of towels down when children have bath

When my kitchen smells it is always the washing machine....

Pretty sure in the end that it was the mop! :-)

I have a hook outside the back door and I hang my mop on that. Mop now lives outside and kitchen smells much sweeter.

Might have to leave mop outside yes. Especially in these summer months!
