right, this dog small is driving me insane!

Rented house with horrible carpet in the hall and dining room.

Have tried everything I can think of to get rid of the smell.

Hoover dailey, windows open as much as poss. Dig bathed as often as we can.

Bought a vax washer, not that good son hired rug doctors,they make the smell worse.

All kinds of air freshners, candles and insense burnery type crap. All no good.

Have also tried bicarbing the carpet for 24hours. Made it a bit better but smell back by the time I got in from work.

Landlord doesnt want it changed to any other flooring, unless we pay ourselves. We plan on doing it but odd shaped hallway makes it a job for a professional. Cant getit done for at least 6-8 weeks. I just dont thinknibcan cope much longer.

Please tell me there is some magic product I can go and buy in asda tonight.

No. I have fat finger issues.

Shake and vac only works if you dont hoover it back up.

Take it up and live with bare floor til you can have new one fitted?

Are you sure its the dog and not the carpet that smells (just wondering with you saying that washing the carpet made it worse)

We did have a dead mouse under floor issue not so long ago*. This is a different smell though.

Definitely get rid of the carpet. We have a rug that BastardDog lies on and he stinks and the rug stinks and the family room/kitchen stinks. So I cook kippers to overpower the gross dog smell.

It is a constant battle with odours.

Bicarb instead of Shake n Vac. Leave it down overnight. Hoover up in the morning. It actually absorbs the smell instead of just masking it with another smell like Shake n Vac.

If you're going to be there a while I'd take the carpet up and re-do it with cheap laminate or laminate effect lino, if the LL is agreeable.

You could offer to do the work yourself and pay for it yourself for a reduction in rent, based on the fact that you will be making his place easier to let or sell in the future.

Anyway dp has agreed to go floor shopping this weekend. So I can officially rip this one up.

Just have to find someone to lay the stuff now.

I'm a bit concerned about the dog - none of mine smelled, unless they'd been rolling, and that was the only time they got a bath, as twice weekly brushing kept them clean and shiny (and none of them ran away from brush as they did at bath-time).

Well she seems fine.

No probs at her vet check last month. Tbh it could partly be me being a bit over dramatic.

Mil says she cant smell anything.

I would just rip up the carpets - give the floors a good wash over with disinfectant ( zoflora is really fragrant).
Buy a cheap runner carpet if you really can't bear the floorboard look, I;m sure that will be fine until you have the cash/time to get it re-carpeted - have you thought about laminate flooring ? the click stuff is not too hard to do yourself, easy to keep clean as well !

Do you wash the dogs bedding every week? I do, and despite owning a Labrador that malts like crazy and loves going in rivers, my fully carpeted house doesn't smell of dog.

Yep, wash blankets at least weekly.

We will get laminate but the floor has a slight slope going up the kitchen that will be hard to do.

I think the problem is that there isnt a window in the hall and the one in the dining room is tiny so even when its left open all the time not much air gets in.

The dog sits at the top of the stairs and in dd1's room and they dont smell.

Hopefully we will get the carper up this weekend so I can start scrubbing the floor underneath.

Yeah, sounds like it could be the lack of ventilation, or possibly just a smelly carpet (which is nothing to do with dog). You could try getting it professionally cleaned?
