Please talk to me about steam cleaners

I want one that will do carpets, upholstery and lino (rented house) but don't want to spend masses of money.

Our cat keeps bringing in mice and DD2 will start crawling soon, so I really just want to make sure everything is as hygienic as possible.

Don't bother with a Vax steam cleaner. I bought one because I had heard they were good, and they're a good 'name'. The little cleaner doesn't really seem to do a very good job and although the floor cleaner works it is annoyingly badly designed - you have to wait for the green light to come on before it is hot enough it then goes off after about 30 seconds of cleaning, wait again etc.
