Silly question possibly... How do you keep your loo sparkling?

I have noticed that since moving house the loo seems to be covered in more 'sticky' bits than before. I have realised this is because the new loos don't really suit a small dc sized bottom iyswim.

So my old routine of bleach and scrub as needed/ every so often doesn't seem to be working.

How do you deal with your loo? Confused

water softener will help, as it will prevent the coating of limescale which is somewhat rough.

The Parazone Bleach blocks that you put in the cistern also slowly remove limescale. If you have a tiresome modern cistern with two press buttons on the top, and the water inlet pipe going in through the bottom, I would not use them though, as they shortern the life of rubber seals, and those cisterns are relatively difficult to maintain. if the water inlet pipes goes into the cistern through the side, above water level, not a prob since the seal is not exposed to the chlorinated water.

p.s.

does the cistern have a good powerful flush? modern water saving WCs can be very weedy.

If it has an old-style syphon inside, this can be changed for a Flapper Valve (needs some plumbing ability, and the cistern has to come off) which gives a more powerful flow.

Look to see if someone has put a brick or hippo in the cistern, or adjusted the water level too low. All of these will reduce the flush.

Yes it's a 2 button flush with the inlet at the bottom. We've already had a leaky rubber ring thingy which damaged the ceiling below! Angry

I'm not a fan of cistern blocks/ tablets in any case so will doubly avoid them.

How do I increase the flush in a modern loo? Confused

change it

a "low level" WC has a more powerful flush than a close-coupled one, though not so beautiful.

the ones with two buttons are quite troublesome, and IMO not very good.

I've heard that 2 litres of coke (can be a cheap one as long as its not diet etc) down the pan does wonders for lime scale. Not tried it yet, but it was from a television programme, so I don't think it would be too risky to try. Seems minimal effort as well, pour it in, leave it am hour or two. Then flush.

Happypiglet · 04/06/2013 21:45

Harpic power tablet once a week for as long as you can (my kids know not to go in the 'blue' loo). Removes limescale. And then usual clean in between times. We live in a very hard water area and limescale is a nightmare!

I have a toilet brush Shock and I brush around the bowl regularly just after flushing the toilet, not only when there's something that needs brushing away. I use Ecover toilet cleaner which has the s-shape neck so it goes under the rim, and I regularly squirt it all round the bowl and under the rim then put the lid down and put the bottle on the lid, usually when we're leaving the house. Before next use, I flush it and brush all round the bowl. It smells lovely. When I clean the whole toilet I use a bucket of hot water and disinfectant and a cloth and wipe every surface twice, then flush. Soft water here.

I did the 2 litres of coke thing today after removing as much water as I could.

It made very little difference and was pointless.

ExitPursuedByABear · 07/06/2013 23:47

Toilet brush!

PigletJohn · 08/06/2013 00:00

I could have sworn that said "two lines of coke"

ouryve · 08/06/2013 00:08

The harpic in the back bottle. The limescale beating cistern blocks help, too.

Can't stand the smell of the ecover loo cleaner. Got that on a MN product test and it took me forever to use up.
