WWYD... kitchen diner or lounge diner...

hello,

basically, at the moment we have the dining table in the kitchen - but it's a squeeze and dh moans every time we use it that he has no room etc...
if I moved the dining area into the lounge we could have a nicer, bigger table (currently have a round 4 seater that extends - however, the only time we seem to get round to extending it is Christmas as it's a faff!) and there wouldn't be the need for a mass furniture move around which is what happens when we all sit in the kitchen...
My question is, would you get pissed off having the table in the lounge all the time? Plus, in my head, the area where the table currently is would become a little 'snug' with an armchair and the babies toys and a nice rug(!) so as one of us is cooking we can have company etc - is this realistic do you think or will it just become unused space?!
Any thoughts greatfully received - thanks!

Must admit that I love having a kitchen-diner, but ours will fit 6 reasonably comfortably.

I do like the idea of the 'snug' in the kitchen though.

Yeh, in my head the snug area is really nice! just worried it will become a dumping ground for ironing and the like... but I suppose I will have to be strict!
I like the thought of having nice dining table accessories as well - sad I know - but they do really nice runners and stuff that would go well with the lounge colour scheme...
Think I might just go for it and if it doesn't work I'll have to flog the bigger table on ebay!!

We recently moved tables around to do similar and I love it. We spend time in the kitchen together (have sofa in there now) and chatter as one of us clean/cook and the kids even chose to sit there at night at times.

We now eat in the lounge and enjoy the kitchen as a comfy place

I am not going back.

Depends on your house layout, we have lounge diner (kitchen too small for table so no choice), the table is beside the kitchen and we have a hatch, but due to the position of the doors I spend my entire life walking through the entire house to get things I forgot. It drives me absolutely mad.

in the house we are offering on in the morning we will move walls to make a kitchen diner out of a sitting room diner.

Pickle131 · 06/06/2013 23:24

I grew up in a house with a kitchen diner but we always ate at the table in the lounge for some reason!
Now I have a rarely used dining room and so we eat in the kitchen diner. But we've moved the table further towards the middle of the kitchen to create space for a kitchen snug with a sofa, rug, baby toys and a dresser. It opens south onto the garden so we're always in there and rarely use the lounge either!

Kitchen diner all the way.

We have a lounge diner, and the space in the old kitchen diner is being used as a playroom. We've a couch, the family computer and a DVD player in there, and we attempt in vain to keep the girls toys in there.

It works quite well most of the time and it means that I can keep an eye on the girls while I'm cooking etc.

If I had a bigger space I'd do kitchen-diner-play area and keep the lounge as just a lounge, but the lounge is huge & the kitchen space is pretty small - and I don't think the landlord would appreciate me knocking walls out like I'd love to do Grin

How old are the dc?

If they are small, I'd keep the inevitable mess contained in the kitchen.

Try it for a while with your current table extended in the living room.

primallass · 10/06/2013 12:00

Kitchen diner. I am never buying another house that doesn't have one or that needs permissions to knock walls down. It was a year before we got that sorted in this house. I could not be bothered to cart the food to the living room.

DrGoogleWillSeeYouNow · 10/06/2013 13:57

Lounge diner would be my preference. I can't stand sitting there eating a meal in the kitchen whilst looking at the carnage of pots and pans and mess everywhere when my DH has cooked.

UtterflyButterfly · 11/06/2013 13:03

Definitely a kitchen diner if possible, but it sounds as though it's not practical in your house. Your idea sounds more workable for your family.

I don't like eating in the living room partly because of smells lingering, especially if you have guests, but that's quite a minor problem. We're lucky to have a huge kitchen diner with room for a sofa as well, and we only go into our small living room if we want to watch TV, which is about twice a week!
