flyswat or flyspray?

fed up of the swarms of flies in the house since the warmer weather started here. Feel like a woman posessed when I go at them with a swat, it takes ages to chase them and then end up with squished dead flies all over my walls, doors and windows, and needing a big cleaning session for it. The spray is quick but stinks and then after a while you start to find dead flies lying all around the place and the toddler thinks they're raisins and eats them. Ugh! I find those curly sticky things don't really work too well.
So what more tolerable solution have you, wise MNers? I'm hoping you'll tell me dethlac sprayed around the windows and doors will kill them instantly as they fly in, but that would be too good to be true, eh? I am tempted to try that for spiders though, if only I could kill two bugs birds with the one spray stone....

Mint or elderflowers near open windows should deter flies - I get them when dog visits next door, probably from old bones- would rather swat than spray.
