Doesn't really make a difference? Want to invest in some new bed linen, what should I aim for?

After much research on thread count/Egyptian cotton etc I upgraded my polycotton sheets and duvet covers to 300 thread count stuff.

The difference is like going from very fine sandpaper to silky cool comfort. I have two sets by different manufacturers. One fitted sheet has shrunk slightly but I do have a deep sided mattress and will have to replace this in reality with a king size sheet. The other sheet washed beautifully but seems slightly thicker and tougher, but just as soft. Both duvets covers have washed well and not shrunk. All the items came from Home Sense.

Thank you! So does high thread count always= high quality?

High thread count Egyptian cotton or pima (Supima) cotton should mean a good quality piece of linen as the fibres are longer/smoother.

However, I went round Home Sense 'having a feel' as it were and the 200 count stuff felt nice too, they just didn't have it in my size. This is still at the low end of thread counts but is still a step up in feel from non-counted cotton or polycotton. You can get silly-count sheets of 1000 thread count but apparently some cheating goes on with the way the thread count is calculated. My friend has 500 count sheets and says it's like sleeping in silk, which I can believe.

Time will tell if any of my 300 count stuff is 'quality' or not, but we're enjoying the sensation for now at least!

Don't bother with the white company though, my 300tc sheets are rubbish quality and I'm waiting for the day I can buy some nice new ones from tk maxx or homesense.

The higher thread count the better.

Poly/cotton is just sweaty.

NEVER buy bamboo thread sheets: they cannot be put on a hot wash.
