Dishwasher - how long should it last? Recommend a new one please!

We have an indesit dishwasher bought with new kitchen about 3.5years ago. It had a new pump installed 13 months after it was installed as it broke, and this week it has just stopped working altogether. Is it unrealistic to expect it to last longer?

I want to get someone out to look a it, DH wants to get a new one. It won't even switch on now.
It cost £140 for the pump and fitting last time, same model new is £250.

Can anyone advise on a replacement should we go down that route?
Ideally I don't want to spend any more than £350 so Miele are out.

we got a Bosch 3 years ago and havent had any issues with it. We gave the previous one to my sister after having had it at least 7 years and it is still going strong so is now about 10 years old. It had to have a rotating arm replaced after it broke but that is all that has gone wrong with that one (it was a Hoover one I think)

Our Bosch is 7 years old I think. No problems with it so far ( touch wood). Same with the washing machine.

My Bosch, and my mum's Bosch, and my sister's Bosch, have all lasted between ten and twenty years and were eventually changed due to moving house, or refitting kitchen, or being more noisy than later ones, and not because they broke down. My old one is still being used by someone who gave me £10 for it.

Can you guess what make the new ones are?

My latest is actually badged Siemens which is designed and made by the jointly-owned BSH (Bosch Siemens Hausgerate) company which also makes Bosch (and Neff, and some other brands). They are said to be even better and tend to aim a bit more upmarket.

Sometimes you will find a special offer or a last-years model reduced at John Lewis, but ask someone to check the test reports.

btw if yours won't switch on, and you have checked the fuse, it may have a leak which has filled the basin underneath and tripped the flood switch. If you tip it over and water runs out onto the floor, it may start again.

pigletJohn it has two continually flashing lights and they won't go off without unplugging just doing nothing.

DH is going to pull it out tonight to see if there's anything noticable.

Our Bosch is about 12 years old and still working fine, although recently I have noticed that some things need to go through again. However, it has lasted alot longer than 3 years

Our last Hotpoint one lasted over 10 years so we replaced it with another Hotpoint.

Have you googled Indesit Dishwasher faults? You might find that it will tell you what the fault is, that way you will have an idea of how much it is to fix.

flashing lights on a modern machine are self-diagnosis signals.

For example, light one flashes three times, pauses, three times, pauses, etc

plus light two flashes once, pause, once, pause

will mean something.

If you can find the instruction book, it will probably have a list of the faults indicated by different flashes.

If you have lost the instruction book, you can probably download it from the maker's website.

well the manual didn't cover the light scenario we encountered but after searching for this combination online we found a forum post with exactly the same problem after 3 years (broken wires within the door).
DH took the door apart and lo and behold, 3 broken wires.

so he's taped them up & its working again...for now...must be a truly rubbish design.

next time, we'll go for Bosch!

We bought a Neff dishwasher two years ago and sent off the warranty registration card. Last week I received a letter saying the manufacturer's guarantee was about to expire (20June) would I like to extend, so I rang the number on the letter to say an engineer was needed as it was not washing dishes properly. I was told that I must contact Neff, not them, as they did not deal with items still under manufacturer's guarantee. All very puzzling.
I rang Neff who refused a free fix unless I could produce the actual receipt proving when I bought it. From two years ago?? The fact that the firm they get customers to register with knew exactly when it was would not do.
After long trawl through two year old credit card documents I discovered that we had bought it from Appliance World, rang them, not seriously expecting they could help, but the lovely girl immediately traced the invoice and emailed it . After a bit of argy bargy where Neff started to say they needed proof of warranty - WTF? they agreed the invoice would do.
Three lessons learnt:
Hang on to all receipts for years, don't rely on those registration cards they give you;
Neff are a pain to deal with, confirmed by girl at Appliance World who said they kept all their records partly because customers had so much trouble with Neff being awkward;
Appliance World are a lovely bunch, free delivery, excellent prices, brilliant aftersales.

I'm in the process of researching which dishwasher to buy, and thanks to PigletJohn I've definitely decided to get a Bosch...now it's just deciding which one! I think my budget's around £400, but could probably stretch a little more if necessary.

Quick question; the dishwasher will go next to the washing machine, in our kitchen. The washing machine (Beko) is silver, so I naturally thought I'd prefer to get a silver dishwasher, to 'match'. But I've noticed that there are far fewer choices with Bosch if I went for silver colour.

Do you think it would look crap if I got a white dishwasher?

our last bosch lasted 15 years. We now have a Neff.

It seems like everyone likes Bosch.

I wanted to say don't buy a Miele. Ours as been a nightmare. It doesn't wash dishes properly, we had service men out 7 times. Eventually (I think after duress from M&S who we bought it from) Miele gave us a full refund.

Even for a free dishwasher it is rubbish.

I got a silver cooker recently, but on further consideration, I reckon tastes in appliance colours change quite frequently (no doubt to make you buy a new one) so like bathroom suites, white will look less unfashionable next year.

DH fixed the problem slinky so we will just keep it running as long as we can. It seems as good as new so fingers crossed we will get more life out of it.

sounds like it should be a Bosch next time though!
