New Fridge freezer

Mine has given up on us, and I've had a look but nothing takes my fancy.

Does anyone have one that they recommend? Or some features that they love?

I'm limited with space, the gap has a width of 660mm so it has to fit in there, but more limiting is the depth, it is 590mm from wall to the front of the cupboards.

Once I leave a gap that leaves me with either the fridge sticking out or a small fridge Confused.

I think I would like a self defrosting one, but looking at the main contenters they are at least 650mm deep, so I would be looking having it stick out 10cm.

Is that even a problem?

Or should I just have done with it and rip the kitchen out and start from scratch! Then I can have one of those ghastly American fridges that I love.

We have just got an LG which I am happy with, I would recommend frost free, and it has a non plumbed in water dispenser which we use much more than I though we would. It has two drawers one for meat/fish and one for veg which are brilliant. Veg lasts much longer than it did in my old fridge.
The downside is DH insisted on stainless steel finish which despite being supposedly fingerprint proof isn't and it's very soft, DS2 fell off his trike onto it and dented it with his head.

I love my Siemens fridge freezer from John Lewis. Lovely big draw at the bottom for veg which I love.
Not frost free as to noisy and I dont have a problem with defrosting.

How does a non plumbed in water dispenser work notso? In a previous house I had a plummed in one that I used loads, I really miss that, but the fridge is too far away in this house to have one.

I didn't know that Frost free were noisy, I haven't had one. We have a tv and sofa at the other end of the kitchen - Are they noisy enough to disrupt usuing that space CS?

So LG and Siemens, I shall have a look and see what they are like.

Well to be quite honest it's just a glorified jug oreo!
It's a container you take out and fill up, but the dispensing element gives it an edge.
I was very Hmm when we were looking and I wouldn't pay extra to have one but it was on the model we chose and we do use it all the time.
I don't find frost free very noisy at all, when we first got it the noise was more noticeable. It's a swooshy/whirly/watery noise but I spend about 80% of my day in the kitchen and it doesn't bother me. It's definitely not as noisy as a kettle or a dishwasher which I have to turn up the radio for.

I've had a look and they LG does look good, I have also been distracted by some very pretty gloss black ones, but they are probably a bit more style over substance!

I don't think that level of noise would bother me, my kitchen is very noisy during the day with DC and dogs and such things, I doubt I would notice.

I am a total slattern so would probably put up with a pneumatic drill if it mean't I didn't have to defrost my freezer!

Ooh good point re TCB, I mainly use quidco but I do have a TCB account.

I think my current fridge's short life may have been helped along by my lack of defrosting! It is only 4 years old.

Right well that seems to be a good option, I shall investigate TCB and get things ordered!

Now off to cook about £100 worth of meat that I found defrosted in my freezer this morning Sad. We shall eat like kings tonight!

the frost-free freezer make crack and bang noises from time to time, as the heating element melts the ice.

Some of them you can hear the fan whirring softly.

My main concern though is that they are much less reliable. If you find someone whose FF has gone wrong, ask if it was a frost-free. I bet it will be.

I will confess that we have two now, but the amount of room the frost-free mechanism takes up in the back meant that the food from the old conventional one wouldn't fit.

That's gutting about the meat.

My old fridge and freezer (separates) were dreadful. Would not buy from Hotpoint or related companies again. The LG had a two year guarantee and a part in it, can't remember which has a 10 year guarantee.

you can refreeze as casseroles and stuff, after cooking, if you get a new one in a couple of days, or have an obliging friend or neighbour.

Some people like to have a low-price or chest freezer in the shed or garage.

Ah piglet if I had pies I would send them to you! Sadly we are a healthy eating bunch and my freezer was full of chicken breasts and salmon fillets .

I do have some portions of soup and something suspicious looking that I think may be pasta sauce if you fancy!

Never mind, I have a small fridge and freezer in the utility room, so I have managed to salvage a small amount and can get by over the next few days untill I get sorted.

I have heard that ff can be unreliable but to be honest no big electrical purchase I make has lasted longer than 4 years. And its not that I buy cheap rubbish, or don't look after it. But I do fancy not having to defrost the freezer so I'm going to give one a try Grin.

Can't fare much worse than the last one. Famous last words.
