cleaning a smelly brass box?

I have aquired a pretty antique brass box. the felt lining is partly removed, only the lining in the lid remains.
it is a bit smelly, smells of coins and musty cellar.
what would a good way to get rid of the smell? removing the felt? getting it sparkly again? can I use glue with brass?

Could you put Bicarb of soda in it to help absorb the musty smell? Then gold old Brasso should work on cleaning it (and make it smell nicer!)

Can't help re felt but I'd imagine superglue would stick new felt to the box?

If you take the old felt out, you can scrub the brass with hot water and WUL.

Any tarnish will not matter if you are going to polish it.

I prefer the impregnated cotton wadding branded Brasso, formerly branded Duraglit.
