Carpet cleaning, get someone in or buy a machine?

Have a dove grey carpet,it's about 7 years old & has some stainage. The other carpets are not too bad. I think it really needs a bloody good clean.
Are there any good machines not too enormous to store (in a smallish flat) or are you better paying someone to do it?

Comprise : get someone in the first time, then maintain with a Vax or Bissett.

They do take up a lot of space, though.

Another compromise : hire a Rug Doctor twice a year or so. But get someone with a truck mount machine for the first clean.
