What would you put in it?

I'm planning to live on my own soon and I've always been a bit of a slattern. What basic kit do I need to keep the house spic and span?

A hoover. The type will depend on your floors.

For cleaning solutions, I say you need 1. A window/glass cleaner, 2. A bathroom cleaner (Flash Bathroom spray is very good) 3. A general cleaner. Again, Flash is good. The stuff in the big bottles. Can be diluted for spraying and moping or used neat. If you cook a lot, Cillit Bang degreaser is great stuff. Bleach is always good to have to hand. Good for shower/bath edges to keep mold at bay. Good for toilets. Just generally handy to have.

Microfibre cleaning cloths and lots of cheap dish cloths that can be used on all surfaces and washed.

A broom, a dustpan, and a brush.

Those are the basics.

Thanks Katy. what's your stance on toilet brushes? There seems to be controversy about them on MN but how else do you keep the loo properly clean?

I use them. You can buy very cheap ones at Asda and throw them away if they get manky.
