Cat clawed carpet... help!

My cat takes great delight in clawing the carpet first thing in the morning.

Although the carpet looks okay it is starting to resemble a bobbly wool jumper. I sometimes use one of these things but it's hard work and doesn't give a great result.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

buy him a cat-tree and his own coarse mat

He is instinctively doing it to make his back and muscles strong and flexible, not just to annoy you.

He had a cat tree and a couple of other 'scratching' toys but never used them!

He tends to do it when he hears us moving around upstairs first thing or when he hears me coming in the front door. It's more like an attention thing.

Looking for a solution to the carpet really...

Have you sprayed feliway onto the spot he favours? It makes it less attractive to them.

Pets at home do a curved scratch pad, it's like a wave shape. Or there's one on a cylinder that moves like a tombolawhen they claw it.
