Does anybody know whether it would be cheaper to phone an 0845.or similar number on a virgin landline (with no calls included in contract except free weekend calls to landlines) or on mobile with minutes included in the contract ?

Yes, tres boring question I know , sorry if it's been asked before

I hardly ever call an 0845 number nowadays. The website www.saynoto0870.com
will most of the time give you an alternative number. Sometimes local rate but very often free phone.

Ok thanks. I'll have a look

Agree - always check first on saynoto0870.com, but where they can't find you an alternative, I think it's cheaper from a landline.
