Help, moths have eaten my carpet!

I have just moved the sofa to find several patches of bare carpet.

A quick look on the internet has told me that this is moths. (They look like grains of rice). I have given it a very thorough vacuum. How likely are they to be in the sofa as well? Any ideas of how to get rid? I will get off to Rentokill as soon as I can but wondered if there is anyhting I can do now.

Will they spread everywhere?

Help!!

Lavender bags will repel moths, not much use to you now i know, but for future reference Smile

How did they get there? Why do they like my carpet? Will get some lavender.

Yes they will go into another room but you can stop them.. My mother go some stuff from a old fashioned hardware/ habadashery ( sp big time) shop. It like a spray and it worked.

Steam clean it(both sides ) and the sofa and anything else that is near that is fabric. After you have steam cleaned it hoover it everyday and keep a look out for moths.

Ps they dont like essential oils, lavender will not kill them or kill the eggs which is what you need to do at the moment. They like the dark and will lay their eggs in dark places and clothes that have been worn once. Natural fibres are their favourites.

There is a special moth that loves carpets. I'm sorry to say that lavender will not get rid of them and you need to get a bit tougher. Steam cleaning might do it, but they love dark places such as under your sofa, and can lay eggs out of sight in tiny cracks, we had them and after a few attempts to get rid of them, I went the whole hog and insecticide bombed them. There are a number of websites that sell the kit you need and we have not seen them since I did this.

I bought something called patriot c online which got rid of our moths. It is a toxic spray! Cheaper to do self than get in rentokill. They like the carpet under the sofa as it is dark and undisturbed. I guess they got there as they are mobile and can fly and crawl!

Clothes Moths like protein-based fibres, such as wool, which is why your carpet is so delicious to them! The things that look like grains of rice are the cases in which the moth larvae live. You will need to treat your carpet with an insecticide. This one is widely used in historic houses:

Hope that helps!
