black marks on carpet

There are black marks all over the carpets in two of our rooms. Looks as though someone has walked on the carpet and got liquid shoepolish or oil on the carpet. How do I get it off please? Our carpets are only 1 year old and the 1001 stain remover has done absolutely nothing.

Could it be mascara? DD managed to get spots of it all over her bedroom floor??, down her stairs, big clump in the box room where her stairs lead to , then subsequently stood on it and trailed it all across landing, down main stairs, through living room on my 4 day old new fluffy carpet
Dh managed to get it off with astonish machine carpet washer fluid, with lots of elbow grease
