oven tray advice - mine don't last!

Hi
I need a couple of oven trays but can't find anything that lasts more than a few weeks. They end up looking dirty even after washing with burnt bits on and a horrible greasy smell. Do I buy non stick or if not what do I use to stop everything sticking? In fact even when I buy non stick things still stick!! I'm wasting so much money on trays that end up having to be chucked out.

Recently a poster went on about how flimsy and fragile mobile phones are and how hers regularly only last a year. It was the phone makers fault that their phones can't take the punishment that she hands out. Grin

The oven trays that you buy are either so crap that they only last a few weeks OR you are a Compulsive Oven Tray Abuser. If the latter then seek professional help.

What type of quality are you buying? I buy two baking sheets at a time from lakeland, and i am always pleased with the. They are on buy one, get one half price at the moment. I wash them when theyve cooled down,using normal washing up liquid, and they stay looking good and last a few years. I pay about £13 per baking sheet.

I have the same thing with frying pans (aswell as baking trays). Totally - when the cheap ones wear out quickly, it's really hard to justify spending out on fab quality unless you know they will last. I found that upgrading to mid quality meant that they lasted a bit longer, but probably only twice as long - not the four times as long as the price would suggest!

I've now got a v. naice pancake pan, that is used with great care, for pancakes, welshcakes and fried eggs and nothing else. And anything that involves stickiness or liquids (frying off mince, curries etc) go in my cheapy Ikea frying pans. I would love something more robust, but this is working...

With baking trays (back to the thread..) I have an enamel tray that does the standard fish fingers and oven chips, despite squeezing it in the dishwasher it is still covered in grease. All my battered trays get the baking paper treatment when I need them.

Happy - are they the silicon ones? These? I keep looking at them...

Ive bought sainsburys, pyrex, prestige and some from TK Maxx which I thought were better quality.
What I don't understand is why they won't get properly clean after handwashing or dishwasher. I hate putting food on the tray like that so have started using foil but surely you shouldn't have to?

We tried several different non-stick trays which sadly did not stand up to the dishwasher.
We now have vitreous enamel trays from Tesco. They are tough, non-stick and cope well in the dishwasher.

I get cheap trays and scrub them with hot water and a scourer or maybe just put them through the dishwasher. I don't care if they turn dark brown and look bad. They work fine.

Try enamel ones imstead, they seem to be far better at not sticking too.

Mine are the non stick thick ones from lakeland - baking genius. I have two of the sheets with a handle, another one from the same range for oven chips, another one which has a border type thing around it so that things dont slide off and any liquid that comes off is contained, and i also have two stainless steel roaster things with handles from ikea. Thats all i need.

Obviously i have pyrex, enamel etc, but thats all i need n terms of trays, i mean.

I am really happy with the quality, and they're doing a lakeland buy one get another half price at lakeland at the moment, with £5 off a £30 spend.

I have a motley selection of trays from various places, which have nothing in common but their small price tags. I find that a soak in nice hot soapy water will take pretty much anything off.

Omg. I think I have just found out what I do is different to everyone else!

I always use tin foil Confused.

Don't most people?

Doesn't matter though as the trays still end up looking shit thanks DP but I don't worry about it as the food is on the foil.

Am I a freak?! Isn't that what tin foil is for?

Btw, oven pride gets the shit off them. It's just I CBA doing it that often!

TheDetective....I use tin foil too!! The stuff that you are allowed to use for cooking, not the sandwich wrapping sort. My trays are disgusting, but I only buy supermarket ones! Think I need to invest x

I really don't know why people care if they get all blackened. If you can't scrub it off, then it's not going to come off on your food, either, is it? My trays are never a problem, anyway.

I think it's like the the seasoning one purposely puts on cast iron. The molecules of the oils actually bond to the metal. It won't hurt anything.

Try rubbing neat washing up liquid onto the greasy tray surface before washing.

I've given up buying trays of any quality as they never last, even expensive ones. I use pyrex now, you can get any shape or size and they will stand all abuse.

I use glass oven trays, possibly Pyrex ones. Clean them in the dishwasher.

We have a swan enamel oven tray we have had it for 4 years maybe and still looks good. We use this for fish fingers and things that can stick, always comes up good with a sponge clean.

We have another oven tray bought at the same time (bigger but cheaper) which is all black and molten this one is used for chips only they never stick and the build up doesnt come off on the food at all.

I'm very anal about the oven trays too. I have only ever bought cheap ones, mainly because dp tends to ruin them by either putting in to wash before they cool down, or putting them into a hot oven after use. I'm now handwashing them and putting over radiator to dry out completely or back into the warm oven if I wash up straight away and the oven is still hot.

I know what you mean about frying pans. We have had ikea shite ones, le crueset £50 ones which were ok to start with and are now shite, but currently I have a really good one, don't know where you'd get them though but made by an Italian firm called Bialetti review here

I wouldn't care if they looked black if they didn't stink the whole house out when I put the oven on to heat up. All the old crap and mostly grease residue heats up and smells gross. I don't really like the idea of putting my kids tea on top of that stinking gunk!
If I do fishfingers the buggers will stick so I have to hack them off. If I use oil they get too soggy.
I think foil from now on every time is the answer. Should have just done that in the first place.
