Is a hand held steamer what I need?

I'd like something to spot clean the carpets, one of my cats is awful for muddy foot prints and I was wondering if a hand held steamer was the kind of thing that would lift the mud out of the carpet with out me having to scrub at it.

With my steamer you still have to scrub to get the dirt out.
If it's mud just let it dry and then hoover it on the highest suction. I usually think it'll never come out, but it turns to dust when dry.

If my steamer didn't weigh a tonne I'd send it to you. It's OK,, but a faff to use.
