I need a new Hoover, can you suggest one?

the best one I can see on Which for less than £100 is the Bosch BSGL3126GB Pro Energy

scores 74%. just short of being a best buy.

the best vacs are mostly Miele in the £150-£300 range, uprights being more expensive.

In the Which Best buy table are a few Bosch and a couple of Dysons.

Henry/Hetty is good, very powerful, and £100.

Is there an upright you (or Which) recommend for about the same cost?

Iv had terrible luck with all bargain hoovers, they end up breaking after a few months (through no fault of mine, I may add :D)

I'd recommend a henry above all others, or maybe a good dyson although they arnt cheap, but as per my experience a cheap hoover does not a good one make :(

I like Henry/Harry/etc. Numatics are workhorses and you can buy the HEPA bag if that's what you want.

Some people find canister vacs to be a PITA and if you have deep pile carpets throughout your house, then I'd recommend getting an upright.

By the way, if your Dyson's motor is still going, why not just give it a good clean and maybe replace the filters?

I also prefer an upright for flat carpeted floors, especially downstairs. They beat out the mud, grit, fleas and moths.

Oh wow, thanks for all this advice. So dyson is not a long lasting make? Henry is quite good, my pal has had a 2nd hand one for 8 years, and it's never failed. My mum has had a numatic for about 20 years still going strong.

So I'm looking at £100 am I? I'm going to check the eczema website, and then hunt through a few dept store website.

it's not a Which Best Buy, but mine wasn't either - mine is the \link{http://www.amazon.co.uk/Miele-Bagged-Cylinder-Vacuum-Cleaner/dp/B0009YERH4\S381 (£115 from amazon)} which was £120 from Currys when I bought it & it's fantastic. I don't think the S2111 has a telescopic tube, which the S381 does - that's very handy & def worth an extra fiver!

the bags are relatively expensive, but they are so dust-tight it's unbelievable, & you can get them cheaper than the Miele price from various online sites

The reviews for the Bosch BSGL3126GB on amazon are really good.

Get the Miele ones, they are brilliant.

I have looked on amazon, and I really like the look of the Miele ones, but they are not HEPA unless they are over £200, it seems. Whereas the Henry is hepa if you get the right dust bags.

Can anyone tell me this is wrong? I really fancy a Miele!

it's true that the HEPA ones cost much more than the others; but the others have a very effective non-HEPA filter, plus really really dust-tight bags

& Mieles have amazing suction, even when the bags are nearly full, & they last for years & years

Henry really isn't nearly as effective from what I've heard

This house is littered with vacuum cleaners, one on each floor and one in the garage.

The Miele cylinder is an older model and might not be HEPA but IIRC it has three filters, including one pleated one, and seems to capture all dust just as well as the upright does, which is HEPA and has similar filters.

BTW the new white "fleece" multilayer bags do seem to be better than the old brown paper bags.

The metal telescopic tuibes on the cylinder are handy.

I just had a look at the "Which" site, it doesn't test for HEPA but it tests for Alleregen retention, and it looks like all the Miele and Bosch Best Buys have a 5-star rating for it, except, surprisingly, the Miele Upright Cat and Dog.

They have 98 vacs that score 4 stars or more for allergen retention.

In the "Under £100 range" (there are no Best Buys here) the best-scoring ones with 5 stars for allergen retention are (best first):

OP was particularly interested in dust mites. I am convinced bagged vacs are better if you have a mite or allergen problem, as you can close the cover over the hole in the bag and tie it into a plastic bag with no tipping or dust-swirling involved.

I love Henry. I do wish I'd spent an extra £20 and got 'James' who is identical except for the handy tool storage box built into the lid.

the Henry and Hetty score 4 stars for Allergen retention, and overall, do not score as high as the ones I listed above (52% overall compared to 74% for the Bosch). There is no mention of special bags.
