Washing Duvets

I have an old duvet that needs washing can I do it in the machine? Its polyester I think. My main worry is that the duvet will somehow damage my machine.
(Don't want to take it to the dry cleaners as we have another spare and its not that good, I would rather give it away/throw it out)

you might find it too big to slosh around. I'd take it to the laundrette, and wash in their big machine

Laundrette driers are big enough, but very expensive to run. Wait for dry sunny weather and do it on a day when you can peg it out.

Morrison's supermarket cleaners have current deal of two double duvets for £20, which is probably better than the £10 I paid local launderette for one a few years ago, as it looked clean enough apart from all the sewing thread, which had turned grey and looked dirty (didn't notice until I got it home).
