Best ways for getting the smell of puke out of carpets?

We've been through norovirus hell and survived but how do I get rid of the smell of sick? Ds's room particularly stinks because he didn't make it to a bucket/sink/toilet a couple of times. Poor kid is traumatised enough after throwing up every 20 mins for 12 hours, he doesn't want to go in to his bedroom any more!

Will shake n vac or febreeze do it? Or is there some magic secret Mumsnet formula?

Bicarbonate of soda/ baking soda.

For carpets you can sprinkle it on and vac it off or mix it with soapy water to clean; can use this on other surfaces too. It neautralises the acidic smell. Don't put too much onto carpets or it's hard to get out of the pile.

Urgh...sounds awful! Your poor Ds!

Anyway what I've done is wash with some washing liquid or carpet cleaner. Make sure you're giving the area a goid clean with plenty of the soapy liquid. Then remove as much moisture as poss with a dry towel. Repeat process several times (sniff test to check how it's going). Then liberally sprinkle with bicarbonate of soda (soaks up smells). Leave to dry then vacuum up powder. Whole process may need repeating. Or if smell slightly there but not too pungent around room then maybe just try with the bicarbonate again (or maybe some shake n vac). I think of you put huge shake n vac on when its still very smelly it won't cover it up and smells just a different type of vile.
