Cleaning up AA battery leak

As it's January I decided, like the rest of the world, that it's time to get fit again. So I pulled out my WII Fit this morning which hasn't been used for over a year since before I was pregnant with DS and I found that the batteries in the controllers have leaked and left a white crystallised substance on the inside. I'm not sure how to clean this off before inserting new batteries...water doesn't seem the sensible solution... can anyone give any tips on how to get rid of this? Thanks!

Once you remove the batteries you probsbly can use water to wipe away the residue. Wear rubber gloves though cos the residue is corrosive. Controller may not work though if its had a leaked battery in it but worth a try!
