of course ectoplasm shouldn't be rule out

Virgil · 01/01/2013 14:45

M25 if its rewrite time I shall scream. Particularly since we have decided over Christmas that I should probably leave my very well paying job and take a 50 percent pay cut to give us more time to focus on the family.

TheMonster · 01/01/2013 14:49

Maybe the house has a cold and it is just snot.

marzipanpig · 01/01/2013 14:50

It sounds like a leak is affecting the copper wire on the electrics and the green ooze might be a mixture of verdigris and fluid.
Best get an electrician to check it out and find the source of the water coming in.

NickNacks · 01/01/2013 14:50

We had this and it wasn't dangerous.

Something they used to put on old wires as insulation (?). I can't remember exactly what it was but it wasn't anything to worry about.

PigletJohn · 01/01/2013 15:03

you are very lucky Xmas Grin

you have encountered Green Slime.

Many electricians dream of seeing a case.

In the early 1970's, for a short time, some PVC insulated copper cable was made with a formula which over time caused a reaction between the plastic and the copper. The slime emerges from the ends of the cable where it is cut. It is not toxic but can interfere with the movement of switches. It should be wiped off with paper towel or similar (the power must be turned off). The switch may need to be replaced with new. The cable will not stop exuding the slime, and should be replaced with new at the next reasonably convenient opportunity. Maybe it is just an isolated piece of cable, or maybe your house is full of it.

I have seen it and shown photos to envious colleagues. A younger or inexperienced electrician might not know what it is or how to deal with it. Ask around friends and neighbours for a local electrician. Ask him

  • which Competent Person Scheme he is a member of (you can check him on their website)
  • How long has he been a member (you don't want a beginner)
  • Is he a Domestic Installer (this is the lowest level of qualification and not very high)
Establish these points when you first make contact, and before making an appointment for him to come to your home.
MadameCastafiore · 01/01/2013 15:14

What you have, young lady, it seems is electrician wank fodder!

I'd post on Facebook and let them bid get to rewire your house as long as they can have lots if Kleenex and be left alone!

juneau · 01/01/2013 15:15

I believe the Catholic church actually does exorcisms for free - or for a donation Grin

Virgil · 01/01/2013 15:20

I don't feel lucky Pigletjohn, I shall feel even less lucky if it drips onto my cream carpets!! Thank you for the help though!

Madame that's a good idea, a free rewire ! Grin
