Help! Cat piss all over cot and soft toys!

Well we have got back from mils to the lovely gift of cat piss all over ds's cot and his soft toys. Obviously the sheet has gone straight on the washing machine, but only one of the toys has washing instructions on. For the moment I have sponged them down with water mixed with napisan, but not sure if that will do the trick. Any advice? Also not sure what to do with the mattress. Have turned it over just for tonight but will need to do something with it in the morning. I am fuming!!!!! :( I just hope his toys are recoverable :(

Unless any of the toys are very delicate or expensive I would put them in a pillow case on a gentle machine wash with bio powder. they should be alright, I've washed lots of toys and so far so good.

Do you have a steam cleaner? If so I would steam the mattress.

If not, how much wee do you think there is? Has much soaed in? If so I might be tempted to buy a new one. If you think the sheet took most of it and it is just the top cover, I would give it a damn good rub iwth washing powder, and then lots of rubs over with clean water. Stand next to/on the radiator to dry.

Probably not what you want to hear, but when one of my cats peed on dd's soft toy, we had to chuck it. No amount of washing seemed to get the stink out. Maybe someone else has managed and will be along soon. As for the mattress, unless you had a wterproof sheet on it, the wee will have soaked through, I don't think you could ever get that clean, probably should be replaced.

I wouldn't even wash a soft toy that was peed on. It would be straight in the bin. If it was DD's special one I would wash it but it would be binned if it wasn't smelling as good as new.

How would I get the toys dry? Don't have an airing cupboard, would they be ok on a low tumble or just put them on a radiator? I don't have a steam cleaner, so I think you might be right about the mattress, it was way more than one wee. Little gits, we've only been away since Sunday.

Justfab it's all of his toys though, most of which he was bought when he was born. I need to at least give them a chance

Ugh. I think I would try to improvise a mattress out of blankets rather than just turning it over. Then buy a new one.

Your poor thing, I'd left dt's pushchair outside after a walk whilst I fed them. I went out about an hour later and was putting it away when I caught a whiff of cats pee. It's such a disgusting smell.
I cleaned it to within an inch of its life and I swear the smell was still there. I couldn't bear it and had to replace it in the end. Bloody annoying though.

For a cot mattress try kiddicare, we got ours from there and it was so cheap compared to mothercare but quality feels the same

To dry the toys I would wrap them in a thick towel and squeeze as much water out as possible them sit them on the radiator.

If your tumble drier has a very cool setting it might be worth a try, but I would worry that it would 'melt' - for want of a better word, the stuffing or eyes.

As it has been left for a few days the smell might not come out though.

I have put plenty of "surface wash only" soft toys in the machine on the handwash/wool setting and they have all come out fine. No problems drying them they came out much dryer than they went in - I think they react well to the spin drying!

You absolutely can wash soft toys in the washing machine no matter what the instructions say- I do often. They will need very careful drying out though (radiators for a week at least). They might not be exactly as they were before, maybe not as soft and their fur might be a bit clumpier than it was.

The important bit is going to be shifting the cat piss. I suggest soaking them all overnight in a quite strong solution of biological washing powder. There is a product you can get from pet shops to clean pet spills and smells but the lady in the shop told it's essentially just biological washing liquid.

Can your little one sleep in a travel cot tonight? Or borrow a mattress/ travel cot from a friend? Its got to be a new mattress though you'll never get rid of the smell.

My cats piss on stuff and I fucking hate the for it. If it were up to me they'd never have come back in after one of the damn things pissed on my wedding dress hung up on the outside of my wardrobe (luckily after the wedding)

Soft toys will be fine slung in the washer and then put on a low tumble.

It's so frustrating isn't it? I'd never have any more cats.

Nope, two neutered males. We have had cats for years and years and yes had the odd poo or vom downstairs but never this

Thanks, the first you came out smelling sweet so the others are in now and my fingers are crossed! Will wash the mattress and try drying it out while we are away at new year, otherwise it's a new one! Thanks all

Phew, all toys clean and survived and smelling sweet again ( well cleaner than before they were pissed on as they had been fairly well chewed). Peter rabbit's carrot needed sewing back on but that was the only casualty.

Soft toys can take a really long time ti dry when the stuffing is wet through.

In the tumble inside a pillowcase will help, or on a hot radiator.

Warm and damp will make them smell.

Inside the fridge, unwrapped, will dry them out with no mould and this also works with damp leather.
