Why do I have holes in my clothes

A lot of my cotton clothes have holes in them but I don't know why.

I bought a new top this week. Wore it for an evening. Washed it and have gone to iron it and there is a hole in it - just 2-3mm across.

So, any wise people who can tell me why?

From your washing machine probably. Any chance you could have a bra wire gone through the holes in the drum?

IWipeArses · 16/12/2012 18:38

Wherabouts is the hole?

Ktay · 16/12/2012 18:57

My DSis reckons too fast a spin speed can cause this

The washing machine is only a year old and the hole problem is years old.

The hole this time is on the shoulder but there is no pattern to where the hole is. I am not aware of losing a bra wire.

Interesting re: the spin speed.

Moths?

PigletJohn · 16/12/2012 23:02

when you take the pump filter out of the machine, do you find anything? no fragments of bra wire, key or mobile phone, or anything else?

rub the inside of the drum all over with your hand to find any sharp edges.

noseynoonoo · 16/12/2012 23:27

It's not moths - one top I only bought this week!

Shall check pump filter.

I've stopped getting these holes since I wash all my tops and bras in laundry bags, and separate from anything heavy or with zips

Holes at the bottom front of your top are caused by belts though

Startail · 16/12/2012 23:57

Week old top goes back, that's a fault in the material.

Yes older tops get holes in them and some washers and washing practices encourage them.

But a week old top goes back.

If your washing machine spins very hard, it can make holes in cotton tops. Try reducing the spin speed on your washing machine.

Ktay · 17/12/2012 11:33

NB Bonsoir is not my DSis Wink

I get holes a lot and I never wear belts and I don't have wired bras. It's a total mystery to me

educatingarti · 17/12/2012 14:33

I think it can be to do with things catching on the teeth of zips. I now do up any zips before putting in washing machine. Seems to help!

noseynoonoo · 18/12/2012 16:51

I have told DH he needs to make sure zips are done up - he actually does most of the laundry !!

I've also bought some laundry bags for my cotton clothes.

i've noticed alot of things seem to go into holes in general much more than clothes used too. I think some of the material is poor quality.
