What's your biggest annual utility bill? Mine's water.

Just been doing a bit of a bills analysis and I'm surprised that our (metered) water bill is the biggest one.
Elec £400 pa
gas £350 pa
phone £320 pa
water £500 pa

Anyone want to share theirs and please give me water saving tips!?

I think ours is as follows (but am Blush to say that I haven't checked recently as they are all done by Direct Debit)

Elec = £700 pa, which seems ridiculous for a 2 bed flat, although we don't have gas so it's only one fuel bill
Water = £360 pa
Phone = £600 pa, but we make a lot of phone calls to SA - at least 2 hours a week - and that includes unlimited broadband so I think that's not too bad.

I need to find ways of reducing the electricity bill

Moredofbumsnet · 20/11/2012 14:17

Our elec bill went down dramatically when we replaced the dodgy frozen up freezer.

Electricity at around £1300 per annum.

cece · 20/11/2012 22:16

Our water meter is £20 pm. 5 bed house, 4 toilets, 3 showers, 1 bath, 5 people, dishwasher on once or twice a day and at least one clothes wash a day as well.

TheDetective · 20/11/2012 22:17

Its a toss up between gas and electric. It is probably gas though, seen as over the 4 years I've been here, we have had no gas for 18 months, and I barely turn the heating on, yet I pay £100 a month Hmm. Electric is £125 a month, but we do use lots of electric I guess! But the gas takes the piss quite honestly!

Water is £360 a year
Phone dunno, I don't use it, just have the land line for broadband. I guess if you add mobiles in then the total would be £80 a month, so £960 a year? That is for 3 contracts and a land line.

saintlyjimjams · 20/11/2012 22:18

Probably water. :also Devon: I vaguely remember it's something stupid like over a grand a year, I try to block it out.

saintlyjimjams · 20/11/2012 22:19

No meter, 5 of us, I let autistic ds1 run as many baths as he likes and go to the beach A LOT. Make sure I get my grands worth

saintlyjimjams · 20/11/2012 22:20

(No hosepipe bans here for the last ten years before people suck lemons about baths)

FunnysInLaJardin · 20/11/2012 22:21

ours is

Water - free on a borehole
Elec - £1,000pa
Oil - £1,500 pa if we are lucky
Drainage - £600 pa
Phone - £480 pa for a landline and one mobile
Parish rates - £300 pa (same as council tax)

dashoflime · 20/11/2012 22:23

Electricity, easily. No gas, storage heater, freezing winters. No way to reduce it really. It is what it is.

Popumpkin · 20/11/2012 22:24

Gas £936
Electricity £840
Water £250
Phone & Broadband £432

We are having new windows & doors in January - hoping that will seriously help our gas bill! We have wooden windows at the moment, no double glazing.

YouBrokeMySmoulder · 20/11/2012 22:24

Gas by a long way, tho not in the summer obviously. Water is tiny and we have the dishwasher and the washing machine on every day.

YouBrokeMySmoulder · 20/11/2012 22:28

Have just looked it up and my gas bill last year went from 21 a month in august to 123 in january.

ethelb · 20/11/2012 23:17

Gas 600
Electricity 360
Water 300
Council tax 660 (Wandsworth)

1 bed flat though.

FoxtrotFoxtrotSierra · 20/11/2012 23:22

I thought ours would be electricity at £960 pa (no gas)

But it's council tax - £1200 pa. If we were 5m to the west we'd be in Wandsworth and it'd be £660 like ethelb!

Moredofbumsnet · 21/11/2012 11:43

How did I forget about council tax? Much more than anything else at £1200pa.
The metered water is about £80-90 per 6mths but the drainage is twice that which is how we land up paying £500pa.

yep thats on a a meter a am afraid. modern loos, its a fairly new build, and a shower device.

south west water----we fleece our customers to pay for the lovely beaches for the holiday makers im afraid. and that combined with tiny population pushes up our bills.
