Nespresso vs Tassimo - what would you buy?

DH and I are doing our annual "shall we buy ourselves a fancy pod machine for Xmas?" dithering (we normally talk ourselves out of it by Dec 25th!), but I think this year we will go for it. He wants the Nespresso as he reckons it makes better coffee, but I'm put off by the fact that the pods are expensive and only available online, and that reviews have mentioned the coffee is not always piping hot (I have asbestos mouth, can't bear tepid tea or coffee).

I like the fact that the Tassimo has more variety and I can buy the pods everywhere, but DH reckons the coffee will be crap. Oh, and I could exchange my Clubcard points and get for free!

DH does love his coffee, but is at work most of the week, so he may use it once in the morning, then at weekends. I'm generally only a one cup of coffee in the morning person and tend to drink more tea, but if we have a machine i think i will use it during the day. We do have a cafetiere and a stovetop espresso maker, but bit of a faff first thing in the (weekday) morning.

Experiences please, and any model recommendations would be great.

Yes I put boiling water into the water reservoir, then press the small button without a pod in there to warm the cup and flush the line through. Then I make a cup of coffee.

You can buy reusable pods and then use your own coffee too but it does take some trial and error.

Finally the benefit of pods is that it's the same coffee every time- beans don't get stale. I read an article in the guardian (can't find it now) saying that many Michelin starred restaurants (including the fat duck) use the industrial nespresso as it's easy and, again, complete consistency.

We just bought a Nespresso Lattissima and I absolutely love it. So easy to use and you can also make excellent lattes and capucchinos without mess, wasted milk or complicated cleaning. Best thing ever.

I wouldn't touch anything Nestle with a barge pole.

I'm fully aware of the Nestle issue thanks Ranty.

Nespresso = the taste of the coffee is for superior.
We have a Tassimo but intend replacing it next year.

Shock at the cost of the Starbucks capsules- £5.99 for 12. Nespresso are £3 for 10.

Blush I broke 20 years of Nestle Boycott for a Nespresso.
Familyguyfan · 08/11/2012 19:29

Definitely Nespresso. I've got a latissima machine (or some name like that) and I adore it. Pods are really easy to order from the app and delivered super quick. Don't seem particularly expensive either.

Nespresso here too. Love my machine!

MooMinCow · 10/11/2012 11:08

Wow lots of votes for the Nespresso machines! Need trip to John Lewis now for taste test Grin

There is a huge Nespresso flagship store.in Regent Street now, with a proper tasting area.

MooMinCow · 10/11/2012 14:24

Bruffin - sadly we are located in Midlands and no trips planned to London before Christmas now Sad.

Does anyone know if Selfridges in Birmingham have a Nespresso counter?

PersonalClown · 10/11/2012 14:26

According to the website, there IS a Nespresso boutique in Selfridges!

MooMinCow · 11/11/2012 18:16

Ok, so went to JL and there was a v.helpful Nespresso lady there who let me play with the machines and make my own coffee - Wow, perfect espresso with thick crema on top and v.tasty (and hot Grin). So I think we will be buying either the Pixie or Citiz. And there is a promotion where you can claim £40 Nespresso club reward.

The best website for me is still Amazon . Somehow everything is so convenient there and you can always trust you are getting a great deal. I also buy from this one: eBay

Curioustiger · 13/03/2013 18:32

My mum got the citiz and weirdly it produces hotter coffee than my nespresso which is an older model. Several people have commented on it but don't know if its just my mum's machine (she is delighted though).

I have seen nespresso substitute capsules on Ocado although I've never tried them. The pods last for ages and ages.... I love my nespresso and would replace it within a day if it ever broke!
