As the title really - I have wondered if I could manage with a roomba and a small hand held type - or if I still need a serious hoover and if so which one. No pet hairs but lots of dust and dirt as have outdoor kids >

Roomba should be fine with a handheld for stairs or awkward corners....

It'll fit under furniture that's around 2.5 inch off the floor too.....

Tho depending on what floors you have you might want a scooba (same as roomba but washes too Wink)

I have a roomba 555 that is supposed to be for animal hair etc and it is great.... Run it daily or even twice if cats have spread litter around and am always shocked by how much hair and dust it collects....

Mieles are good.

We had a more powerful panasonic that was rubbish.

I have Miele cylinder and an upright dyson for the different floors. Both a few years old but Miele is by far the better of the two even though I have to buy bags every couple of months.
