How can we remove cat urine smell from football boots?

This is not a question I ever thought I would need to ask, but after leaving a pair of muddy football boots overnight on the decking by the back door it became apparent that a tom cat had decided to mark its territory by spraying them liberally. They have been washed twice and after letting them partly dry out tonight it seems the smell is as bad as ever. Any suggestions? They are almost new and will have to be thrown away if we cannot stop them stinking the house out

Have you tried sprinkling bicarbonate of soda inside?

Wash in biological washing powder/liquid. Spray with a mix of water and surgical spirit. Then wash the next day.

Or bio washing powder liberally shaken inside, & spray outside with something like febreeze?

Alternatively you can drown out most horrible smells with a good sprinkle of olbas oil (worked on our old cat's favourite bit of carpet for discreet tiddling...). You could try wiping the outsides with something like that, dissolved in water, & sprinkle it inside them.

I had thought of bicarb, so might give that a try, we did soak them in a solution of bio powder, but might also give the water and surgical spirit a go. Thanks for all the suggestions, I have had cats myself for over 30 years and never had anything like this to deal with before!

the person who wears football boots is responsible for cleaning them. It is not a mum's or a wife's job.

They can be thrown in a bucket of water if muddy. If you have a very old washing machine that you don't care about, I am told they can be put through a wash and slow-spin, like trainers, though I have never done it myself. They must be washed and scrubbed free of any mud first, though.

Nike football boots are prone to this, you don't need a cat even tho it smells like a cats tiddled in them. Nike dont admit it but when boots get wet they give off bad smell like cat wee. don't know of any cure apart from buy Umbro next time! not as stylish or hip but wear really well and protect feet well. I have been coaching football to boys and girls 4 - 11 years for over 14 years.

Try an enzyme pet odour removing product like Mr Muscle or Simple Solution from Pets at Home. Clean the mud off and spray them liberally with the enzyme solution. Let them dry and the whiff should be gone. I prefer the Mr Muscle as it has a nice 'clean' scent.

Agree completely with Adamtheimp. We vowed never to buy Nile again due to cat smell - DH forgot. Catpiss smelled returned at exactly the same time as new Nike boots!!!

Yes, my kids have had Nike boots that have done this. We took them back and got a refund even though they had been worn.

Agree with the others about Nike boots and the cat pee smell, nike trainers too, there is no way to get rid of the smell!

was going to say exactly that,one of mine were's Nikes and they all have that smell,i bung them in the machine

Well, I have a DS who makes every single make of trainer / football boot / rugby boot smell like cats pee.
It's awful. Only ones that don't smell are his leather school shoes.
hes had smelly feet from he was no age.

I bung them in the machine and dry them under the radiator. They don't last long.

Now that he's 13, he's wearing the breatheable KSwiss, and they are miles better, but not perfect, still occasional Eau De Cat in the garage combined with Eau De Mud.

I also have a DD whos boots smell like cats pee. Am going to check if they are Nike. I was blaming our cat. i tried the bicarb of soda, aired them on the clothes line etc but the smell returned. So must not be the cats fault.

I thought it was just Nike boots, but we brought my son quite an expensive pair of Adidas boots for Christmas and they stink of cat wee again!! I've tried everything to get rid of the smell

Yes. We had the same problem with ds Nike footy boots. Definitely nowhere near a cat and reek of cat wee.

Use the washing suggestions above but add white vinegar. I have found this fantastic for getting rid of cat urine smell. I also add zoflora... but that's another thread. Lol

Simple solution is brilliant for getting rid of cat urine odours, you can get it from Amazon or pet shops. Use it liberally. Zoflora in the wash is great for getting rid of smell from sweat etc as it kills the bacteria that cause the bad smell.

This has happened to us, twice. The first time with Sondico football boots. Annoying but not the end of the world as they're relatively cheap. This time though it's a pair of Nikes. I thought the cat had peed on my son's PE kit as the whole lot, even the outside of the bag reeked but the boots are to blame. They were inside their own bag and I guess we didn't dry them properly after they got wet. Lesson learned (again)

Yep, ds's rugby boots smell too. They have studs though so can go in the machine. I've sprayed them with most things tbh
