when ever we run a bath in our house and then turn the taps off the house is filled with an awful whining noise from the loft, it happens when we turn the cold water off....what the hell is it, do i need a plumber or can i do something about it myself ??

water hammer is a banging noise.

what you are describing means the washer in the ballcock is worn.

It is quicker and easier to swap the entire valve. Turn off the house stop-cock first, then undo the large nut holdinf the valve to its stem.

You can take the old one apart and rewasher it at your leisure on the kitchen table, when you have plenty of light and time to work. Then you can put it next to the tank as a spare for next time.

A new valve is not at all expensive.
this is a very good one but you can get cheap ones.
you need a part 2 valve, which has the plastic bridge over the top to prevent syphoning

You can re-use the old plastic float.
