nasty smell in new house

We.moved into a 30's semi a few months ago. It's a lovely house but the front room smells fusty, I only notice it occasionally but the last few days it's got very potent.

DM and DH reckon it smells like strong unfiltered cigarettes and it isn't damp. I think it smells of a cross between old people's house, dog urine and cigarette smoke. It's really quite revolting.

The carpet in there looks clean and it's new and same goes for the curtains. Could it be the old walls? Would a lick of paint help?

wash all surfaces with sugar soap and ventilate a lot. If the carpet and curtains are really new they should not need cleaning but sniff the underfelt.

did it get worse when you put the heating on?
