Washing machine & using vinegar - how?

I have been googling using white vinegar in my wash as my towels are so crunchy. Perhaps it's because I keep coming across US articles, but they say to put it in your machine for the rinse cycle. No clue what this means though - do I wait by the machine until it reaches that part of the wash and then pour it in??! Does anyone use it for washing?

Put it in the bit where you would put fabric conditioner. On mine it's on the right.
The other compartments have 1, 2 and the fabric conditioner bit has a 3 on it on mine too.

yes, just put it in where the fabric conditioner usually goes. I sometimes put half a dozen drops of lavender oil in as well with the vinegar as it adds a lovely smell if I need to dry them in the house.

You can smell the vinegar from the machine when it is washing, but the towels etc don't smell of vinegar when they come out.

And it has to be white vinegar, don't use any other kind Grin
