Smell in bathroom when we cook broccoli

That's it really. The smell pongs out if the bathroom about 10mins after cooking broccoli or peas. I'm assuming it's the drains but we can't locate the exact source.

We have poured bleach down all plug holes to no avail. Weird thing is that whit comes suddenly and leaves suddenly too.

Sometimes we get the smell late at night and I assume that maybe they are repairing the drains outside in the road. Some of my neighbours also get the smell. We are in a top floor flat.

What's the connection between broccoli and the smell? I'm thinking it should be obvious but I don't think I'm that clever...

I can't remember the reason for it too early but try putting a couple of slices of lemon in when you are cooking the broccoli. It helps kill the smell and works with cabbage too.

it might be that the soil pipe has an air admittance valve (looks like a lid or hat) on the top that has stuck open. This is an alternative to having the top of the pipe come out through the roof. The soil pipe is probably in a corner of the bathroom, and probably boxed in.

It might also be that one of the waste traps in the bathroom, most often the shower, is being sucked dry, most often by the bath, due to poor design. If you put a wet flannen over the plugole, that will block it as a test.

It might also be that the smell is wafting through gaps in the kitchen ceiling, most often through holes somebody has cut to poke lamps through.

I have exactly the same problem with cooking smells in my DD's room. Especially frying onions. The thing that I don't understand is her bedroom isn't even above the kitchen, the stairs and therefore the whole stairwell are in between.

Pigletjohn I wonder if our bath is sucking our shower waste trap dry? There is sometimes a pooey smell in the bathroom and I can never pin down where it's from. Can you please give me an idiot proof guide to the flannel test? Thank you. OP, I share your pain, though I would prefer to smell brocolli rather than poo.

Is someone sneaking into the loo after eating their greens and farting?

For poo smells (and this is gross) try under the loo if you have one of those pedestal ones. I called the little man out for what turned out to be DS missing the loo, getting wee on the floor then sloshing water over it, which was seeping under the loo and mixing with all the accumulated dust and debris, smelling like a vase of deal flowers (aftere several weeks decomposition).

make a flannel wet

flop it over the plug hole

this will prevent odours coming up the plughole even if the trap has been sucked dry.

Also look at the soil pipe (110mm diameter) and see if it is vented through or next to the roof, or if it ends inside the bathroom, perhaps concealed by boxing-in in the corner, and has a vent inside the house, on the top of the pipe

Everythinggoingtitsup while you prefer the smell of broccoli, I absolutely hate it! It too smells like boo or nasty feet!
