Why do people use fabric conditioner?

I used fabric conditioner years ago and it just seemed to make the clothes all floppy and very strong smelling, which makes me feel ill.

Why do people use fabric conditioner and what's it meant to do?

I have know idea. It can't do that much can it as it gets rinsed off?

NotAnAxeMurderer · 11/09/2012 17:33

I don't like it either, too strong smelling, even with a little bit. I sometimes use vinegar instead but I'm not convinced it does anything either!

I think vinegar does more than fabric softener tbh. It completely deodorises and I found out the other day that it works really well in hard water as it reacts with any left over soap or detergent in the fabric in the rinse cycle.

I like the smell. It's OK, I won't make you wear my clothes.

maybenow · 11/09/2012 22:13

I use it on towels, stops them being so crunchy/scratchy when they first dry.. i think if you use a tumble dryer or dry outside this isn't such an issue but we dry on 'pulleys' indoors (high ceilings).

I love the smell, also in winter i dry our laundry on radiators, fabric softner does just that..softens our clothes. If i dont use it, they are stiff and rough.

Personally, i LOVE it.

randomfemale · 11/09/2012 22:16

I like it, I like the softness and I like the smell of it.

When I can smell this on someone's clothes 100 metres away, I do wonder if they're using too much.

MaureenMLove · 11/09/2012 22:28

I don't use it usually, but occasionally I get asked by a friend to do a market research on them. I do notice a difference in ironing, when I use it. It's much easier for some reason.

Don't buy it myself though. It's an expense I can do without.

I like it because it makes the clothes all floppy. Or, to put it another way, soft.

EmpireBiscuit · 11/09/2012 22:38

I am pregnant and I want to stick my tongue in the fabric softner with every wash I do....not what you asked but there you go..
