Cleaning mud off leather boots

Wasn't sure where to put this and I rarely venture into this section of MN as I am a slattern but I need help of the practical variety.

My brand new leather biker boots are caked (and I mean CAKED) in mud and fake snow (don't ask!) . Honestly, they look like I've donea whole weekend at Glastonbury in them. What's the best way to clean them up without damaging them?

TIA

sponge, outside only, with warm water with half a drop of WUL per sinkful.

pack with newspaper to dry in shape, repolish when dry, apply waterproofing oil if you use it.

Thanks, PigletJohn

Sponging done and so far, so good :) Next time someone warns me that it's a 'little bit muddy' on site, I'll err on the side of caution and go equipped with thigh waders wellies,
