Decluttering Support Thread

I am about to embark on a 24 hour declutter-fest (I might allow myself a couple of hours off to sleep!Grin) to kick-start my new and improved tidy and organised self and wondered if anyone else would like to join me.

Ds is away and coming home tomorrow afternoon so his room is first on the list and it must be finished before he gets home.

There is a whole week of free-listing on eBay from tomorrow and I have just signed up to freecycle and Gumtree so am determined to get rid of as much as possible without it all going to the tip!

We're clearing the driveway today. I reckon three dump runs might do it. Then weeding all week and order some new gravel... One job down, millions to go WinkGrin

fuzzpig · 09/09/2012 15:11

Done quite well today. Parents as predicted brought shed loads but they kindly went to the charity shop for us while we sifted through it, we picked out loads of things to get rid of straight away which is ready to go to the dump later today.

And yet it's depressing because in the grand scheme of things it is a teeny tiny drop in the ocean of our house!

Slatternismymiddlename · 09/09/2012 15:26

Fuzz pig - you have done brilliantly. You didn't allow some of the stuff to even get integrated into the house, which is a start.

All over it - one job less to do Smile

I have not done any decluttering this weekend as I hoped, but have organised quite a few things - soup made for freezer, bought Christmas presents hidden up in the attic, went through kids wardrobes and bagged up the too small items, all random items of clothing that were littering the house collected and put in laundry or given a home.

AllOverIt · 09/09/2012 17:46

Well driveway is clear and weed free. Need to put some Pathclear down, but started spitting with rain. It was only 2 dump runs in the end Grin it's so lovely to see all that s-p-a-c-e!! Grin

Hello all - its Monday and what a depressing day it is too. Did anybody get anymore decluttering done? Or as I like to think of it -"space creation"!

fuzzpig · 10/09/2012 18:26

AAAAARGH!!! Yesterday after all that sorting out we didn't have time to go to the tip. Mum and dad were going to take the stuff back with them as they have a skip ATM, but then forgot to take it with them! So we had to drag it back into our full-to-bursting outdoor cupboard thing. :(

Probably won't see my parents again until the day before DH's operation so I guess we need to try and fit the tip run in then - and hopefully find loads more stuff to take along with what we've already sorted!

SmileItsSunny · 10/09/2012 20:04

Oooh can I join?
DH is away, so I have right now some time to declutter...

First question : I have a lovely blue handbag, on which the zip is broken. Should I chuck it out or put it in charity shop pile?

There may be more questions coming... please bear with me. I really need support here.

AllOverIt · 10/09/2012 20:42

Chuck it.. I would!

I sorted DD's drawers today and put all the clothes into bin bags. They're on the floor of the wardrobe in her room but now can divide it up into charity, pass on and dump!

Going to do little and often this week...

SmileItsSunny · 10/09/2012 21:06

Thank you. Ahem, I've been MNing instead. Will sort one bag of toys and two bags of clothes, then go to bed.

Makingmama · 10/09/2012 23:11

When somebody has the time could they tell me the pros and cons or tips for gum treeing, ebaying or carbooting. I have never done any of them and am a little bit scared Blush.

betterwhenthesunshines · 12/09/2012 11:18

Childrens rooms and my wardrobes done in the last week :o plus overflowing kitchen drawer.

But I've been putting off my desk, large cupboards in dining room, and new staorage that we put in the sitting room that house 'files' sewing machine, art and craft stuff, spare stationery, photos to put in albums.... I know it's just going to be a mountain before it gets any better.

I really think I have to take it all out before I sort and put it back in. Going to take dog for a walk and then put the radio on and crack on with it TODAY :)

AllOverIt · 12/09/2012 16:41

Well down betterehenthesunshines. I've done nothing all week as my Grandad died on Sat so I've been rushing around sorting stuff for funeral SadSadSad

SilverSixpence · 12/09/2012 16:56

DH is cross with me at the moment as we are moving house and he has discovered mounds of clutter and things I have bought without him noticing Blush. Endless clothes, books, bits of paper. I'm going to try and declutter a bit each night as we move on Saturday.

On the plus side, I have started selling off lots of wool on Ravelry and have made a small fortune! Ebay listings are going a bit slowly though, don't people WANT cookbooks? Grin

HiccupHaddockHorrendous · 14/09/2012 15:20

Alloverit - sorry about your grandad Sad

I finished work at 12.30 and ds is walking home from school by himself so I could get on with tidying/sorting but I have a splitting headache and period cramps so have been sitting down since I finished work.

My aunt is doing a charity shop/tip run tomorrow morning so I need to gather some stuff to send with her.

Re eBay/Gumtree. I have been selling on eBay for many years and I would say start off with a couple of small, low value items just to get used to it. If you have a smart phone/iPad, the eBay app makes listing very easy and straightforward.

I'm new to Gumtree. I listed four items a couple of weeks ago and got bery little interest and didn't sell any of my items. I think it depends which area you are in as to how well things sell.

Facebook selling pages are recommended by many but, again, I haven't had any success so far...don't think I live in the right area for the things I'm getting rid of.

Last year, I decided that I'd only eBay items that I thought I'd get at least £10 for as it takes a bit of effort to list/pack/post but sometimes I have things that I don't think would sell in a charity shop but there may be someone on eBay looking for the exact same thing so it saves it going to landfill.

Right, i'm off to make a start before ds gets home and thinks I've been sitting on my bottom all day Grin.
