Organising your freezer?

We've got a chest freezer, which I love but DP is desperate to be rid of (to make even more room for sports gear...grrrrr). My argument is that it saves us loads of time and money, his argument is that it takes up too much room and he can never find anything in it anyway. I've just been foraging in it for something I knew was right at the bottom and yes, quite frankly, it's a mess - packed full of enough to feed us for a good long time, but so disorganised. I know one of the answers is to use up what we have and start again, but does anyone have tips for keeping it easy to access and organise. I really have to convince DP that we NEED it.

Don't know if it would work for you, but I keep most of the stuff in my chest freezer inside bags (mostly the fabric fold a shopper type shown here as plastic bags disintegrate after not too long).
Within these I mostly have them organised in a way that works for me (so meat in one, frozen veg in another, home cooked frozen portions in another etc). It can still be a slight pain as inevitably there are times when what I want is in one of the bags at the bottom, but it mostly works pretty well for me.
I wouldn't be without a freezer, and although I wonder about getting an upright instead (which I don't have the money to do right now), you would then be more restricted in terms of awkward sized things etc

Oh, that's such a simple idea! Thanks - that would definitely work.

I don't have a chest freezer, but I try to keep certain things in drawers, e.g frozen veg in middle drawer, ice cream in top away from more smelly thing like pureed ginger and garlic in the bottom.

I also keep a list of what's in it, and which drawer. I refer to it when I meal plan as I can then often make the basis for 2 meals using it. Doesn't need to be fancy, I just use recycled envelope but you could maybe use a dry wipe pen on the outside of the freezer? When you use it , cross it out. Every so often I take the drawers out and spend 5 mins re packing/writing a new list. Sounds anal but saves so much faffing finding stuff and save time/money too.
