Cheap ways to black out windows

We've recently moved house and after gutting the downstairs we've run out of money to buy things like new curtains. I want to get my baby daughter used to what will be her bedroom by having some of her nap times in there but the curtains are awful and let so much light in they're hardly worth having! Until we can get some proper blackout curtains does anyone have any tips for blacking out the window (it is quite a small window) on the cheap?

one of these? We use it on holiday, have blackout linings in the curtains thanks to MIL being handy with a sewing machine.

We taped bin bags to the windows frame when we first moved in. It's not pretty but it does the job.

Thank you both. Will give these suggestions a try.

Hi, (must name change) ps how do you do that?? posted while having a bad day before! I got lengths of black out curtain linings and put velcro on them, one bit sticks to the window the other is sown to the lining. Works brilliantly, better than curtains. We have black out curtains and still use the linings as it really cuts out the light and 6am morning sun. Just make the lining a bit bigger than the window.

You could check out local charity shops for curtains, you just need some that are washable.

Something in a heavy damask or velvet would be enough to block the light.

we used to use tin foil

I second the Gro anywhere blind. It also means you'll get a better night's sleep when you're visiting friend's / on holiday!
