I've learnt this from other MN's
I would dry the rubber ring inside the machine with paper towels and then put it on a very hot wash. I always leave the door open after every wash for the ring to dry out. I always use half a cup of soda crystals with every wash that helps get rid of limescale. Hope that helps.

I was advised by a washing machine repair man that the problem is caused by all the cool washes we do nowadays. After you have cleaned it as suggested above, in order to help stop the problem returning do a very hot wash with bio powder approx every two weeks (maybe the bed sheets?). If you are worried about the ecological impact bear in mind that the ecological impact of repacing a washing machine is high, best to keep the one you have in good order! Hope that helps!

Washing machine engineer advised me to use a teacup amount of bleach, nothing in the machine and a boil wash. It worked. I don't think I would put a coloured wash in straight after though to be on the safe side.

Can I just ask you about the bleach - did you put it straight into the drum in one of those plastic ball thingeys? Or into the drawer?

My washing machine smells like smelly broccoli despite several recent boil washes. DP also frequently drains old water from a pipe underneath the washing machine (not sure what this is called).

Am also guilty of the cool washes so I guess it's time for a weekly boil wash.

Yes cool washes combined with liquid detergent. Always use powder. Unused liquid builds up and goes rancid.

kellykateneedsaholiday · 23/08/2012 10:34

I put the bleach in the drawer when I do it, it worked for my machine.

Oh thank you! I never thought of that. Powder all the way hereforth.

Thanks kellykate, I'll give it a go.

that fine, my friends who are very green used liquid on cool washes, lol thier whites were never white lol. They actually busted the machine with it.

I always use liquid when washing. My mother try's 2 tell me that its less harsh on my dc skin than powder.

I believe anything I'm told though Hmm

Maybe I should change back 2 powder
