Dirty marks on hot plate of iron

I'm sure this has been done before... But what's the best way to get rid of dirty marks on the hot plate of an iron? Not sure what it is, but looks vaguely sticky and blackish and a few marks have come off on clothes which I've ironed.

The magic erasers sponges get marks off soleplates really easily?

'Faultless Hot Iron' cleaner - on Amazon, EBay etc. bloody amazing stuff. Stinks, but will restore your iron soleplate to shiny newness!

White vinegar on a bath scourer worked for me (obviously let iron cool down first).
