Help! TERRIBLE smell in kitchen!

It's awful and it's getting worse. I can't pinpoint it.

Doesn't seem to be coming from sink (have put Jeyes fluid down and no change). Dishwasher is new (and still smells like it!).
Im wondering if its fridge or washing machine? Have cleaned out fridge recently though... Have run washing machine on hot wash...

Still this goddamn awful smell!

Help me please!!!

Check you cupboards for rotten potatoes. Many a time we have found leaking, stinking spuds lurking in a dark corner.

Thumbwitch · 16/08/2012 07:38

Do you use your oven a lot? Was something left in there if you don't? Asking because years ago a friend had this - turned out to be a cauliflower cheese that she'd actually forgotten was in the oven (she didn't cook much).

Either that, or it could be a dead mouse behind/under the units.

Haemadoots · 16/08/2012 07:39

I had a terrible smell in my kitchen whenever it rained, turned out it was my drain Sad smelt of rotten eggs it was awful.

LittleMissNorty · 16/08/2012 07:40

Do you have something dead under cupboards or behind fridge? Mice can crawl in through the smallest gaps.

Haemadoots · 16/08/2012 07:44

Sorry should say the smell was coming from my outside drain but travelling in through sink so although my sink was fine the smell was coming through it.

SoupDragon · 16/08/2012 07:44

My guess is a stray potato.

bertiebassett · 16/08/2012 07:51

Thanks everyone.

Cooker is fine...all food gets demolished in this house Grin

Nothing in cupboards that's gone off (ditto above)...

Don't think it's drain because smell definitely not coming from sink...

Mouse under units? THATS a possibility...will be hard to look though as kitchen fully fitted...

My mum says fridges can smell if they are starting to fail (something to do with the gases). Anybody had any experiences of that?

Even fully fitted kitchens should have removable kickboards at the base, you'd need to unscrew them and shine a torch through to have a look.

Also, check under your fridge (if you haven't already) to make sure nothing has accidentally rolled under there and died...

bertiebassett · 16/08/2012 08:17

Thanks thumb Smile

Under units it is then.

Fridge is also fitted so will have to try and get door off to get it out...

Now...where did I put that screwdriver?

IME mice like to die under fridges.

Dunno why - perhaps they go there because its warm from the motor.

If you think its drain smell coming up you could put in the plug and see if it goes?

bumpysquash · 16/08/2012 14:28

Get someone trusted round to do a sniff test. I once had a stinky kitchen for a week or so, then my mum visited and straight away identified the smell and we were able to fix it.

HazeltheMcWitch · 16/08/2012 14:33

Have you checked your washing machine throughly? Mould on seal? Pull it about a bit to look in the folds. Mould on the powder drawer? Are your pipes at the right angle so that no drain smells can drift back up?

NameGotLostInCyberspace · 16/08/2012 23:21

I recently had an UnIdentified Stink in my kitchen. Took ages to locate. After checking and checking I pulled the fridge away from the wall.
I found that at the back at the bottom there is a plastic water tray which I couldn't remove but it was full of some kind of stinking goo like old cheese! Had to soak up the water with kitchen roll and try to wipe it out. Haven't had a problem since.
HTH.
