Kitchen cupboards/surfaces smell

Our house has an old kitchen, and as we are not in a position to do it up we need to stop it smelling. It's not a "bad" smell presay. More and old smell. My kitchen is immaculate and cleaned every day, but their is a definite smell by morning, when the window has been closed all night. How can I stop it? Empty it all out and vinegar wash them?

What are the cupboards made of? Wood? Laminate?

I suggest you empty all the drawers and cupboards, get a BIG tub of bicarbonate of soda, sprinkle liberally inside all of them and leave over night.

Mext day, hoover and sweep it all away.

Then wash down with white vinegar...if it still smells, use bleach and scrub in all corners well. Leave the cupboards and drawers open overnight and empty.

it's as you say, age...the smell of old glue and other things which have been absorbed by the cupboards.

if it's the kitchen, it may be that greasy film left by cooking. Sugar soap will get it off, but old oil and fat goes tacky then hardens like varnish. Vinegar and bleach do nor remove grease. You can use white spirit on wooden surfaces. Pay special attention ro walls and floor near and around the cooker, and to upwards-facing surfaces like the tops of cabinets.

If you have an extractor fan or a cooker hood that extracts outside, leave that running. If it is noisy get a new one.

The kitchen is old...in that it was a friends, who was getting a new one installed. We moved into this huse which had no more than a cupboard in the kitchen, so friend kindly offered to put his old kitchen in ours and installed it for us. So it's new to us but it sat in a garage for a few weeks, but isn't mouldy, doesn't smell mouldy. I sunned it for a couple of days, used bleach etc to clean it all...white spirit is a good idea too....that will pong though and gives me a cracking headache.

get some beeswax polish...not cheap but lasts AGES and when you have cleaned it all, polish it inside and out...oak will suck it up and retain the smell which is lovely.

I don't know any scientific evidence, but I suspect the White Spirit Headache can be when it soaks into your skin. Use plastic gloves (not rubber ones which it will dissolve)

Just breathing it in gives me a headache...wierd!
