Anyone have a kitchen bin solution?

Sorry it's dull!

At the moment I have a large kitchen bin and use black sacks but despite nightly emptying, it stinks! All the time! I've bleached it and obviously take awful stiff like dirty nappies straight out to the dustbin but due to an open plan layout, the whole house pongs.

I'd like to switch to using carrier bags (we have loads!) and a smaller bin but I can't find one that is practical for a kitchen. A sort of bucket on a shelf would be great but odd looking?

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be greatful! :)

If you empty a black sack daily, you'll go through a lot of carrier bags in a day! I really don't see how it can smell if you have bleached it. Leave it outside for a bit? Rinse meat plastic trays before putting in the bin. I have a bin under the sink. It only gets emptied about once every 4 days, but doesn't get pongy (or maybe I have low standards )!

Well it doesn't fill up every day but I still empty it each evening when cleaning up. Much of it does get washed and straight out to the recycling bin too so I agree, I've no idea why it still stinks but in very paranoid about since i'm a CM and invite parents in each day, I don't want them to complain!

Not sure about your current pong, but have you thought about one of those ones that goes in the cupboard under the sink?

how about a brabantia bin? the lids seem to have a pretty good seal so I don't think they let too much pong through?

Are you sure it's the bin that ponks? Sounds like drains to me.

What goes in it? We typically only get through one black bag a week, and only empty it into the dustbin when it's full, not because it's smelly. The smelliest thing in ours is small animal bedding, but that generally fills it up so it does go out soon afterwards. Can't see how it could be smelling every day. Is there food in it?

Could it be residual smell in your bin? It shouldn't really smell if it's emptied every day. Are there any crevices where bits of rotten food could get trapped? I have a simple human bin with removable buckets and a coupled of times a bit scuzz of some sort has dripped down between the shell and the bucket making it smell even when the bucket is clean.

My MIL has a carrier bag bin like this if this is the sort of thing you're looking for? She loves it and it seems to work very well for her, although I think I would find it a bit small, but that is mostly because our wheelie bin is miles from our kitchen and I am too lazy to treck out to the bin several times a day

Ok much to think about.

Will freshen the kitchen drain tomorrow just in case and will also give the bin another once over. It's a fairly simple plastic bin with a push button lid, no removable bucket so not too many crevices.

Quite a bit of food goes in it- I mind on average 5 children a day plus my own three. I also put wet nappies in there inside scented bags but pooey ones go straight outside.

Am liking the two inside cupboard bins you've linked to, a good space saver too.

We have a fantastic bin arrangement which is a pull out cupboard with bins inside it. We have a purpose-cut hole in the worktop with a big wooden plug-type thing in it which you use to drop bits in the waste bin, and then you pull out the whole front of the cupboard and it all slides out to reveal compost and recycling bins too. The last owners installed it when they did the kitchen up and it's brilliant!

Might cost a bit more than buying another bin but probably quite easy to install the cupboard inside your kitchen. Keeps all smells inside, I promise you!

I always found that using black bags made the bin smell worse tbh. I used normal white bin liners.

Since moving, I have bought a small bin and use carrier bags inside it. I then have a dustbin outside with a large black bag in, and I chuck the carrier bags in there each day (or more often if needed).

Agree with nutcracker - there is a smell to black bin bags that makes any rubbish smells worse. Try using white bin liners.

Wet disposable nappies do smell!

Why don't you just have a separate nappy bin? We do and only have 1 child that way you don't have to keep emptying your kitchen one?

ikea sell a plastic frame thing that can be attached to a wall/inside a cupboard and holds plastic bags... might be just the thing?

I empty my bin when its full - sometimes 3-4 days. Don't have a problem. It is enclosed in a cupboard tho (carrier bag sized Ikea pull out on rails jobby).

However, there are some things I put straight out in main bin, mostly v pungent things -
ALL nappies (when appropriate).
Cooked eggs that haven't been eaten
Supermarket containers holding raw meat.
All takeaway leftovers/packaging.

If you do move to a carrier bag bin - double bag! Works well tho.

Have you tried a bin freshener? Jeyes do great bin freshening disenfecting.g granules that you sprinkle in with the rubbish but I think they are designed for outdoor bins.

We don't put food waste in the big 45l Brabantia bin - that is for landfill waste only and is emptied into big wheelie bin outside weekly but more frequently if full. Doesn't start to smell unless someone has put meat wrapping in and then I empty it sooner. I just do a quick wipe over with damp cloth and dettox spray to keep it clean and fresh. Don't put any liquid or anything likely to seep gunky stuff in, so don't have any seepage to deal with!
Cardboard, glass etc is put out into green box outside, daily, as I don't have space for it.

Food waste is collected in a lidded plastic tub and goes into separate recycling bin outside. I empty tub daily (more if needed) and wash out so is always clean.
Don't have nappies but these used to go in separate bin and empty daily. Or straight out if stinky!

I empty bin when full, even when living in a house with no food waste collection that would be twice a week max, no smells, what on earth are you putting in to make it smell daily??

Hi, I think I have the same problem, we are an elderly couple living in a flat. We never waste food. So we mainly only bin packaging. However, the recycle bags smell so bad our kitchen stinks every other day. We’d need to put the bags out every day, which would mean emptying them when their almost empty to cut down on the smell. I’m sure it’s the bags themselves that cause the smell, other than going back to using carrier bags I don’t know what else to do. Any suggestions?

We have always used carrier bags -more recently stretched over curver baskets -one waste, one recycling. It doesn't smell as its emptied probably twice a day but its unsightly. Even so, we recwntly got a bin for recycling with some eco friendly decomposing bin liners. All was well until the bin liners themselves staryed to smell and I mean honk. I reckon they must be made of some animal derivitive, fish probably! Anyway the liners pong, the 30l bin is too narrow and just gets jammed. Dh want to return to 3 curver baskets lined with carriers. I agree.

Our bin used to stink because of food rotting in it.
Try one of those small kitchen caddy bins for which you can by compostable bin bags (about £2.50 for 50 bags) and empty this daily or every couple of days. Our local council collects this waste otherwise use as compost or chuck into wheelie bin.
We know empty our main bin once/week with out any smell issues.

I have just seen others have advised separate food waste bin. Our bin liners don't smell at all, we get them from Sainsbury's or through our local council.
