I never hoover the stairs, find the best think is a handbrush, a firm one, you can sweep down the skirting board too at the time.

I bought the Dyson Turbo head and it cleans the stairs really well.

I also have a Turbo vac which is excellent, and I used it for years untill I got the Dyson attachment and now I prefer that.

Shoshe is right that a firm brush cleans stairs very well too. You can get a small rubber bristled handbrush from lakeland that they recomend for sweeping the stairs but I haven't tried it.

You want banister brushes. Stiff bristles for the carpet and soft for the skirting and banisters. Sweep the dirt down from top to bottom then hoover up. Refluffs the carpet quite nicely too.

Also try rubber gloves! A clean pair, and stroke the carpet firmly from outside edges into the middle. You'll be amazed how much fluff, hair (human and pet if applicable) balls up which can be binned before hoovering.
