kitchen counter blown - help!!!

Hi all,
Our kitchen counter was not well sealed when it was fitted , and near the sink there is a join in the laminated particleboard countertop. I should've known not to leave anything wet there, but when left to do the entire cook/feed baby/clean up/bath/bed cycle alone the other night, I stupidly rinsed a plate, went to put it in the dishwasher, which I'd left full of clean stuff, so left it on the side.
Now the counter on one side of the join is proud of the surface by about 1.5-2mm - enough to look awful and to have had a massive shouting match with (not that D currently)H about it last night. I do feel bad though, so is there something I can do to repair (preferably something that can be done post-work, whilst also caring for a 9month old who hates being put down and left for any length of time)?
Feel like if I can repair this, at least one miniscule aspect of my life back under control .
Thanks for your help!
