Smelly washing machine! How to make it smell better?

our washing machine is about 3 years old and is now starting to leave our clothes with a very horrible musty smell. Any tips on how to get it smelling better? We can't afford a new machine at the moment, and it wont let us do a really hot wash! Any tips gratefully received!

Run it empty on the hottest wash.

You can add white vinegar to the empty wash as an extra cleaning agent.

As shatners said. Plus use biological powder. Using liquid based cleaners gunks up the machine and causes smells!

We had that problem - but now every 3 months we do a "deep clean" with a powder from the supermarket (Dr Bekman or something like that) really works well, got rid of the yukky smell from the machine. Also cleans out the drain!!

Ah! Have been using liquid recently, so will go back to powder. Will also try the Dk Bekman stuff. Unfortunately we can't use biological powder as DH says it irritates his skin (but may give it a bash and see if he says anything as I'm not sure he knows what he's talking about!) Thanks again all!
